Bio
Whilst studying architecture, I began to suspect that what goes on between the walls might be more interesting than the walls themselves. I became interested in cities and urbanism; not just the built environment and infrastructure, but the interactions, the people, systems, services, stories, governance, toxins, dirt, surveillance, communities, sleaze, hormones, technology, relationships, smells and all the other things that (surprisingly) still make us want to live in urban environments. By 2050, 75% of the world's population will live in cities; that's potentially 8 billion urbanites. I think designing and questioning this unprecedented future is important.
At the moment, I am exploring the relationships between the body and the city, considering the impact of emerging technologies on the private individual and the public body, and the unexpected social, cultural and ethical effects of our potential futures. How will knowing your genetic future affect you, your identity and your experiences? Will it change your priorities and values? What new behaviours, rituals and relationships will be provoked by the promises and realities of biotechnology, nanotechnology or human enhancement? How will our experiences and understanding of the urban and non-urban environments change? And how can design research be part of this questioning process?
