Every Pollinator Pathmaker edition is a unique planting plan for a living artwork, generated by the artist's altruistic algorithm. Each living artwork is optimised for insects’ tastes, not human taste, countering the convention of a garden as a place created by and for humans.
Ginsberg’s new video artwork presents Pollinator Pathmaker edition Vn8BG3rVof, inviting human viewers to experience it from the viewpoint of its insect visitors through the seasons of a year. The virtual landscape is composed of Ginsberg’s paintings of each plant species, selected by the algorithm, and rendered in her custom software. Edition Vn8BG3rVof is, as yet, unplanted: contrasted against the iconic architecture of London's Southbank Centre, it offers a utopian proposition for a different world we could make, where we prioritise space for other species.
The film moves through the living artwork from the perspective of a foraging pollinator. Its colours shift between human vision and Ginsberg’s specially developed "pollinator vision” filter, offering an imagined glimpse of how its inhabitants might encounter the living artwork created for them. Presented on an 8m LED screen, the flowers fill the sky, evoking plants and their surroundings encountered at insect scale.
The sound incorporates recordings of bees and other pollinators in a shifting digital soundscape, drawing visitors closer to the sensory experience of pollinating inhabitants whilst reminding us of its unreality.
Pollinator Pathmaker is an ongoing artwork for pollinators, planted and cared for by humans. Created with horticulturalists, pollinator experts and a computer scientist, its algorithm generates planting designs intended to support the greatest possible diversity of pollinator species. Alongside its living editions, the artwork has expanded into digital works, tapestries and prints, inviting humans into the experience of pollinators through empathy and imagination.
